“I don’t get why he can’t just go to a hotel?” the man asked.
“Because he’s an old friend.”
“He’s been here for two weeks. I can’t take another day.”
“It’ll be okay. I told his mom he could stay here.”
“And if she didn’t happen to be your boss?”
She avoided his eyes trying not to say he was right.
“That’s what I thought,” he said triumphantly.
“Come on. Let’s just get through tonight and we’ll sort it out from there.”
“Ugh,” he said, “but if he’s mean to you one more time. I’m going feral.”
“Mmmmm well maybe I’ll let him push you buttons then,” she said putting her arms around him.
“You guys have a dog?” Brian asked, coming into the room.
“Don’t you knock” the man asked.
“I found all these chewed up bones in the backyard.”
“Probably coyotes,” she said.
“The teeth marks are too big.”
“Oh you’re a zoologist now?”
“Hey I….”
“Now. Now,” she said.
“Why don’t we go eat and just relax.”
Dinner was anything but relaxing.
“God, not this again,” Brian said, “Can’t you learn to cook anything decent.”
“That’s it,” the man said. He sent a plate flying across the room. It nearly hit Brian’s head.
He was on his feet. He could feel a primal rage bubbling up. However, a look from his wife told him to cool it.
“Honey, I think it’s time to take your medicine.”
“Good idea.”
”Brian do you think you could find somewhere else to go for a while until he cools down?”
”I was going to go hiking. There’s supposed to be a full moon tonight.”
“Fine. Just go.”
Brian hurried along the empty path. The nighttime air was cool.
He huffed his way along the trail.
The man stepped out into the middle of the trail.
“Whoa. Hey. How’d you get out here so fast?”
“Shut up Brian.”
“What…..?”
“I’ve put up with this for too long. I never wanted you here Brian. Cassie is the nice one. And I stayed quiet while you insulted her and put her down.”
“It’s just teasing. We’ve been doing since we were kids”
“No it isn’t you’re an awful person Brian and I’ll be glad to get rid of you.”
“What are you going to do?”
He tossed him a vial.
“What’s this?”
“It’s called Wolfsbane. It’s an elixir that if taken regularly will keep a werewolf from changing.”
“Werewolf?”
“Yes Brian.”
“Oh stop.”
“Feel the bottle Brain. It’s heavy. I didn’t take any.”
Slowly he grew larger. His face lengthened into a snout. Hair sproute over his body.
“Oh my god,” Brian said as he turned to run.
Only to run into Cassie coming up the trail behind him.
“Cassie! Your husband…he’s….”
“A werewolf. I know,” she said looking over his shoulder. “You said I could have him?”
He had changed fully now. The tall dark haired werewolf answered. “I couldn’t help it. He’s just so annoying.”
Brian came to a horrifying conclusion.
“Those weren’t animal bones in your yard were they?”
“No,” Cassie said as she started to turn.
